Abstract:

Background: Accurate diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis wouldavoid unnecessary treatment and scar formation. Direct smear isthe most common method for the diagnosis of this disease but itsnegative result could not rule out the infection; so, the need formore sensitive methods is obvious. We conducted this study tocompare the efficiency of direct skin smear with smears preparedby fine needle aspiration (FNA) using polymerase chain reaction(PCR) as a reference method. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, which was conductedduring two years from May 2008 to May 2010, 33 patients withsuspicious acute cutaneous leishmaniasis based on clinical studieswere randomly selected. Direct skin smears and FNA smearswere taken from each patient and PCR was performed on biops

comparison of leishmanin skin test and direct smear for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis

cutaneous leishmaniasis (cl) is an endemic disease in some parts of iran and it has high morbidity in some areas of the country. the disease is detected by parasitological examinations including direct microscopic and culture tests. this comparative study aimed to evaluate the relationship between positivity of the leishmanin skin test (lst), microscopically examination and clinical forms of cl...

Comparison of polymerase chain reaction with other laboratory methods for the diagnosis of American cutaneous leishmaniasis: diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis by polymerase chain reaction.

An evaluation of 5 laboratory methods for diagnosing American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) was carried out on patients from an endemic area of Brazil. From 164 patients presenting cutaneous lesions, and suspected to have ACL, 133 (81.1%) were confirmed for the disease by Montenegro skin test (MST) and/or parasitologic examination (PE). In both groups of patients, the positivity of polymerase c...

The Comparison of Direct Microscopic Examination and Culture Results in Diagnosis of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

Abstract Background and Objectives: one of the endemic foci for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Iran is Mashhad in which limited outbreak have recently been reported. The commonly used method for diagnosis is the clinical features confirmed by direct microspic examination and culture or biopsy. We compared these two tests to determine the level of their sensitivity, specificity and positive predicti...

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology versus Fine Needle Capillary Sampling in Cytological Diagnosis of Thyroid Lesions

Background and Objectives: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an established out- patient procedure used in primary diagnosis of palpable thyroid lesions. A modified technique fine needle capillary sampling (FNCS) obviates the need of suction, is less painful, patient friendly and reported to overcome the problem of inadequate and bloody specimens. The aim of our study was to compare the...
